Each year, Marshall-DeKalb Electric Cooperative invites two outstanding students from each school on our system to compete for a spot on the Cooperative Youth Tour, hosted by AREA and NRECA. With six schools participating, that means 12 exceptional students step up to take on this challenge, and make no mistake, this is not an easy competition.
The process begins with an essay, carefully judged by the Snead State Community College (SSCC) Judging Panel, followed by a personal interview with that same panel. Just making it this far speaks volumes about these students’ leadership, dedication, and academic excellence.
From this group, eight students are selected to represent MDEC on a three-day Youth Tour in Montgomery, AL. After the Montgomery Youth tour, four will be chosen by their scores from the previous judging, along with their overall participation and leadership on the Montgomery Youth Tour, to determine who will make the trip to Washington, DC, in June. The final four will network with peers from across the country, learn why electric cooperatives matter, and see firsthand how cooperatives are involved in government and public policy.
